There may be other triggers or various causes for rashes, eczema and other baby skin problems appearing within your baby’s first year. But ultimately, these baby skin problems are the visible results of imbalance in the skin’s pH level. Take this short refresher on the skin’s pH level and gather useful info on safe and gentle baby care.
The Skin’s Acid Mantle and pH Balance
Short for “Potential Hydrogen,” pH describes the acid-alkaline ratio of a substance. The scale ranges from 0 (most acidic) to 14 (most alkaline). It affects the skin in a way that it regulates how the acid mantle functions. This is a thin, protective layer on the skin’s surface protecting it from environmental factors (air, water, sun, pollution, harsh products) that speed up skin ageing, cause irritation and other problems.
pH levels also affect how your skin looks. If your skin is acidic or has a pH level under 7, it appears red and problematic. On the other end of the scale, the skin appears thin and dry, and worsens as long as the skin is exposed to pollution and dirt.
pH Levels and Baby Skin
For babies, the ideal pH balance in the skin is about 5.5.
The bad news is that babies are as exposed as you are to the damaging effects of free radicals, pollution and dirt, but baby skin is not as developed as adult skin is. The dermis—the acid mantle with it—is thinner, delicate and prone to drying out.
To lessen the chances of skin problems and conditions, a pH level of 5 should be maintained to support and strengthen the acid mantle. And one easy way of doing this is by being mindful of what baby products you use and by employing proper baby care practices.
Baby Care for Baby Skin
Baby care starts with playful yet gentle baby baths, and at the heart of baby care for skin is the use of the right skin care products.
Conventional bar soaps and some bubble baths tend to be alkaline, which may dry out or irritate your baby’s skin. You’ll want to go for products that are pH-neutral or mildly formulated.
Keep your baby’s skin’s pH level in check with the gentle and safe-to-use TriSoPure Baby Wash.
